SUMMARY:Acoustic Jam
DESCRIPTION:Monthly Theme: Apple Time \nAll singers & acoustic instrumentalists welcome to this free event. Various genres including folk\, bluegrass\, acoustic rock\, blues\, country\, roots and hybrids usually represented. Small amps are OK if you need it to be heard—other electronics (like mp3 players with speakers) are discouraged. Chords and lyrics are helpful when we’re learning something new\, especially if there are more than 3 or 4 chords. A drawing will be held among participants every jam\, for a $10 gift certificate from the Cafe. Lastly\, we ask you order food and drink off the menu and refrain from carrying in. \nAfter nine rewarding years\, Jam coordinator Scott Lowery is ready to pass his monthly duties off to someone else! Could that be you? He says it only takes an hour or two each month to crank out the publicity\, along with occasionally touching base with the staff at the Cafe. If you’re interested and want to talk more about details\, send Scott an email blowery2@hbci.com or a call\, 507-689-4532 (leave a message if he’s not home).

SUMMARY:Andrew Kasab
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Kasab is an American fingerstyle guitarist\, harp guitarist and singer-songwriter. He is known for combining traditional and contemporary techniques\, energetic performances\, arrangements of modern works for the guitar and harp guitar and occasionally plays harmonica and ukulele. \nHe has been performing for over 30 years at music halls\, events\, festivals\, restaurants and other venues\, self released 11 albums of solo material\, and plays multiple styles including folk\, blues\, country\, bluegrass\, jazz\, American fingerstyle\, American primitive and contemporary acoustic styles. \n“Raleigh’s Andrew Kasab plays a curious instrument: the harp guitar. His twelve-string acoustic apparatus looks like something snatched from a Hieronymus Bosch painting\, but in Kasab’s hands\, it delivers the most delightful sounds. On 2015’s “Fish\,” Kasab tackles a surprisingly wide range of styles over twenty-four tracks\, from the opening\, American Primitive-inspired “Ire” to the snappy\, aptly titled “D St Funk.” Kasab’s music is gentle enough that it works well as a background complement to an easygoing night…but do give yourself the favor of giving him your rapt attention instead.”\n– Allison Hussey\, Indyweek (Jan 04\, 2018)

SUMMARY:Bradford Loomis
DESCRIPTION:Had he lived one hundred and fifty years ago\, Bradford Loomis may have been riding rail cars out west or sailing down the Mississippi on a paddle boat. Or maybe he would have claimed his stake in the flat lands of the Midwest. Perhaps he would have plied his hand on a ranch in Texas. \nBorn in the Northwest in more modern times\, Bradford has lived to tell a different\, but no less exciting\, tale. Through years of choir\, band and orchestra he discovered a powerful kinship to the songs and stories of those bygone eras as they helped show him a meaningful way to tell his story. \nBradford Loomis marries grit and melody to dig to the roots of American folklore and speak of the raw reality of the human condition with passion. His stories span several lifetimes of relatable emotions; bitterness & loss\, deep longing & regret\, enduring hope & love\, elation & joy. \nUpon learning recently that his father was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s disease\, Bradford starting laying the ground work for this new project. Bravery and the Bell\, (released March 24th 2017) is about legacy\, both the lineage we are born into and that which we pass on. Whether burdened or buoyed by our generational inheritance\, this album confronts the drudgery of simply surviving and sounds a call to stand up to the things that stand in the way of us truly passionately pursuing that which we were made to be. \nBradford’s influences include Chris Stapleton\, the Swell Season\, Johnny Cash T-Bone Burnett.

SUMMARY:Alluvion
DESCRIPTION:If anyone is wondering what the next “basement gem” to come out of Minnesota’s underbelly is going to sound like\, they should probably talk to Berndt Evenson\, the guitar-weilding gent responsible for Alluvion. \nEvenson has been in various musical groups since he was a teenager\, ranging from psychedelic rock (Con Queso\, featuring Seth Mooney\, and Greg Norton of legendary punk band Husker Du) to Tech-House and Hip-Hop (Simply Us\, featuring Dustin Lundell\, and Roe Pressley aka Swee2th of Minneapolis based SubClass ent.). While playing numerous festivals and clubs in the surrounding midwest alongside talents such as The Meat Puppets\, Eyedea\, Carnage\, Dessa\, Sole\, Kanser\, and Kris Krane\, he was toiling with the sounds that would soon develop into what is now known as Alluvion. \nThe first four Alluvion albums (taken down by the creator “to start fresh\,” as he says\,) were rough\, but playful explorations in dark\, yet mellow wobbly bass synth sounds\, combined with melodic textures\, and thumping percussion. The full length release “The Deepest Depths of Shallow Waters”\, was a whole new beginning in more ways than one; Evenson not only clearly improved his production skills (due in part to help from friend Karl Folk aka EvilScience\,) but took his love of movie and song sampling and threw in a great deal more live guitar and even several tracks with his own\, albeit mostly heavily processed\, vocals. It is an impressive new turn and continues to show that Alluvion’s releases are anything but predictable. \nFresh off the 2017 Spring Tour (which consisted of 36 shows in 40 days\,) through practically every state west of Minnesota\, Evenson began planning more shows for the upper mid-west and beyond with intentions to release more full length releases before another full tour cycle. His cover/remixes of Eiffel 65’s “Blue (Da Ba Dee)”\, Tove Lo’s hit “Habits” and Bob Dylan’s “Ballad of Hollis Brown” have certainly caught the attention of audiences; and although he says he has no intention of becoming a “cover band” he enthusiastically hints at more remixes in the near future\, “I have some really interesting ideas for the next ones (laughs\,) I doubt anyone will see them coming.” \nThe Alluvion concert experience features live guitar\, midi tweaking\, analogue ribbon improvisation\, and heavily effect driven vocals. Evenson seems determined to assure audience members\, that this isn’t typical EDM or basement rock; however\, once you’ve seen or heard Alluvion\, that becomes delightfully apparent. The ongoing motto from Alluvion over the past few years has been\, Feel The Waves\, with the ever-growing sound from album to album\, it has become clear how that came to be. \nal·lu·vi·on\nəˈlo͞ovēən\nnoun/LAW\nthe action of the sea or a river in forming new land by deposition.

SUMMARY:Society of Broken Souls
DESCRIPTION:Society of Broken Souls is a Folk Noir songwriting duo of multi-instrumentalists Dennis James and Lauryn Shapter. Shapter and James know a thing or two about broken souls. While their music is deeply rooted in the time-honored tradition of storytelling\, their songs move seamlessly from the darkly fictitious to the profoundly personal — meaning they come by their name honestly. With not just a few scars and more years behind them than ahead\, they each have stared down their own personal demons in order to serve the art form that has never let go of its hold on them. Though they tried their hand at the straight life\, it never took. “Music is the only thing that makes any sense\,” says James. “Nothing else matters.” In their return to music\, they are discovering true artistic freedom and rekindled joy in pursuit of their craft. \nCalled “a songwriting powerhouse” (Ben Kieffer\, Iowa Public Radio)\, the duo performs their own brand of American roots music. While they have their roots as an acoustic duo\, their live show has blossomed into an expansive setting for weathered characters\, tough topics\, and quiet beauty. Fiddle\, drums\, keyboard\, and acoustic and electric guitars\, in intricately woven and varied arrangements\, create a wide\, dynamic palette. As they take turns singing lead and harmony\, the pair paints a vast emotional landscape\, ranging from the rebellious and jubilant to the introspective and heartfelt. \nAbove all else\, James and Shapter sing their truth\, and in doing so\, offer a solace that comes from bringing the broken-hearted jewels out of the darkness. By having the courage to look to the cracks in their hearts and the chips on their souls\, they have discovered a redemptive beauty. It drives their art\, celebrates all of life\, and invites the listener to walk through the fire with them — and to find freedom\, strength\, and joy on the other side.

SUMMARY:Sleepy Gaucho
DESCRIPTION:Begun as an experimental project with the mere purpose of sprinkling songs with soothing and eclectic soundscapes\, Sleepy Gaucho draws a large influence in roots music and songwriting while also exploring the freedom of the studio. His discerning brand of Panamerican influenced folk music floats somewhat aimlessly in a realm of it’s own. Born in Wisconsin while also growing up in Argentina\, the young multi-instrumentalist’s music can at times be melancholic\, at others ethereal\, but always agreeable. The seven track debut record “Another Time” (March 2018)\, initially recorded in Madison\, WI\, was eventually finished after the songwriter happened to find himself drifting around an East London neighborhood for a few months.

SUMMARY:Moonrise Blue
DESCRIPTION:My name is Brian A. Thompson\, and I’m a music addict. \nAs a young child\, I spent many an hour playing with my mom’s record player\, becoming intimately acquainted with the sounds of REO Speedwagon\, Air Supply\, and The Osmonds (fostering an eclectic taste in music early).  As I grew\, I’d rarely travel without my Walkman\, or later in life\, CD player or mp3 player.  It took many years into adulthood before I realized that nothing was stopping me from picking up a guitar and learning how to strum a few chords\, so that’s what I did.  I spent a few years with some buddies forming a garage rock band where I learned some of the ins and outs\, but when that dissolved\, I ended up on my own – which brings me to here. \nMoonrise Blue is my acoustic project – a chance to work out a handful of original songs while cultivating a variety of covers from various influences throughout my life.  Some are straightforward\, and some I’ve shaped and redefined in my own style.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy being up on stage and playing them! \nWhile I have a few songs up on YouTube and plan to someday sit down and record an album\, live shows are my bread and butter.  Over the past few years\, I’ve gotten out to perform wherever I can in the southern Minnesota / northern Iowa area\, from Rochester’s Cafe Steam to Albert Lea and Austin’s Farmers Markets\, at open mics in Clear Lake and Minneapolis\, breweries\, wineries\, coffee shops\, and many places in between.
